In Rift you can multiclass up to 3 of the classes within your archetype of Rogue, Warrior, Mage and Cleric but cannot use classes from another archetype on the same toon. You also have the option to stay 'pure' and just put all of your points into a single class upgrading all of it's abiltiies to maximum but having less abilities as you would if you spread them between two or three classes. Had a quick peek at the forum when I was bored earlier and here's the known classes so far and a little bit of basic info:

Rogue

Assassin - Stealthy melee fighter. Uses poisons. (Damage)
Bard - Musically themed buffer. Has some minor heals (Support)
Blade Dancer - Fast attacker with some evasive abilities (Damage)
Marksman - Ranged attacker. Kiting specialist (Damage)
Nightblade - Mix of stealth, magic and melee. (Damage)
Ranger - Ranged attacker with an animal pet that can tank for them. (Damage)
Riftstalker - Defensive rogue that can teleport between enemies and players. (Tank)
Saboteur - Explosives and traps user (CC + Damage)

Warrior

Beastmaster - Pet class (Damage + Support)
Champion - Two handed weapon specialist. (Damage)
Paladin - Shield specialist tanking class. (Tank)
Paragon - Dual weidling Warrior. (Damage)
Reaver - Tank class with some lifetapping Death magic. (Tank)
Riftblade - Elemental fighter that uses a mix of magic and melee. (Damage)
Void Knight - Anti-mage specialist (Tank)
Warlord - Uses 'Auras' that buff allies and debuff enemies and can tank (Support + Tank)

Cleric

Druid - Mix of pets, melee, magic and healing. (Damage + Healer)
Purifier - Fire magic based healer. (Healer)
Inquisitor - Life and Death magic nuker. Can drain life and mana. (CC + Damage)
Justicar - Clerical tank with some small melee based heals (Tank + Healer)
Sentinel - Life magic based healer. (Healer)
Shaman - Melee attacker and buffer (Support + Damage)
Warden - Water magic based healer. (Healer)
Cabalist - Death magic based nuker. Specialises in big AoE damage spells. (Damage)

Mage

Elementalist - Summoner class with a small amount of Earth, Wind and Fire magic. (Damage)
Pyromancer - Fire magic mage. (Damage)
Warlock - Death magic mage. (Damage)
Storm Caller - Wind and Water magic mage (Damage)
Chloromancer - Life magic snd healing mage (Healer)
Dominator - Crowd-control specialist (CC)
Archon - Supporting mage that buffs allies and debuffs enemies (Support)
Necromancer - Pet and death magic based magic (Damage)

<3 the class system. finally a game where u can make ur char completely to ur liking. no more cookiecuttercrap (weeeeeeeeeeee!)
does anyone atm know how many chars u can have all in all?
cant wait till it comes out. cause the potential of this is so friggin mindblowing.
also do we know at this time wich faction we want to make the guild, as it seems we cant be both factions in one guild?( atm i must admit i have no preferences)

Well I'd love to be Defiant if possible. Guardians just sound like a bunch of relgious fanatics to me, bleh.

Ya, I'd have to agree with Ked, I like the sound of Defiant more than i do with Guardian

Quote :
While the Guardians run around Telara building temples, sticking their noses in everyone's business, and desperately praying for a miracle, the Defiant plan on actually delivering one, even if it means being branded as heretics and operating outside the laws of the land.

Updated.

Mage's Chloromancer and Cleric's Inquisitor are surprsing. It looks like the 4 'Callings' arent as clear cut as Tank, Healer and DPS as they ere in Vanguard.

Found a bit more info on the levelling and class system earlier when I was bored at home, heh

You don't start with all 8 of your "Calling" 's souls (classes) unlocked. You choose one of two available at creation (which apparantly represents what you were before you died) and then you have to earn the other 7 through quests and things. One of the two is allowed to both factions the other is faction specific. For example: a Guardian Cleric would choose between Sentinel or Inquisitor and a Defiant Cleric between Purifier or Inquisitor. You can learn the starter soul you didn't pick and the other faction's unique starter soul later in the game at a hgher level.

The other 5 souls in a calling are "Heroic" souls that can't be chosen at character create at all and can only be quested for. Heroic souls aren't better or worse than the starter souls. Just different.

You can pay to have your 'affinity points' reset in towns. So after you learn a new soul you can have your points reset so you can move them all into your newly earned one from your old one of you want to.

Updated the info with a quoick note on the class's roles. To make it a bit easier to plan out groups for when the big day comes. There's a fair amount of crossover between the callings. Not all Warriors are tanks and not all Clerics are healers as you can see.

Either "Damage", "CC", "Support", "Healer" or "Tank"

Defiants can be Assassins. it's just not a starting soul for them so the ycan't start as one right from character select. Defiants have to pick it as a soul reward from one of their soul quests instead. Same goes for all souls which look to be based on your faction. That was the case in Alpha at least apparantly, they might change that for bea or release.

Not much is known about the Ranger ad marksman. But from what has been said the main difference is that a Ranger stands his ground to let his pet tank the mob for him. While a Marksman has a lot of abilities to help them kite (speed buffs, knockbacks, stuff like that). They're both bow/gun using damage dealers.

You can go half ranger half marksman if you wanted to and just cherry pick the abilities you want from both classes.

Bare in mind the different starter souls between different factions is an Alpha thing, that might change for release. But yes you're right you can start off the game as a Warlock or Elementalist and then pick Chloromancer as your first soul quest reward if you wanted. Then move all your soul points into it.

Reports from the Gamer Day event said that they got their first soul quest as early as lv7 before they event left the starter area. So you should be able to change to chloromancer probably within a few hours of startign the game.

No problem. By the way the letters stood for Defiant, Guardian and Heroic (Heroic was the title given the souls that can't be chosen at character creattion and are rewards only).

Updated this a bit. Also removed D, G and H tags as you can now start as any soul.
