It's become too random even to play at all now, i lose conn by the time I log in. Telecom Engineer coming out tomorrow and we have established now that the problem is not our equipment so has to be between the main box in and the exchange, so it's their fault. (its taken a year to work this out!)
It's got so bad now that the phone only works when no Router is connected and the Router even drops conn without a phone connected. Yet right now it's fine with the phone connected
Totally random, which doesn't help when you're trying to eliminate possible causes.

As for the first time I have a way to prove it isn't our fault internally, by attaching both the phone and the Router to the main socket internally as I did today (with Kev in attendance to verify my findings and with a second, brand new router that he brought for the purpose, to make sure it wasn't my modem) and the same problem still occurring. Of course, I realise with being a random fault, it inevitably won't happen with the engineer trying it and I'll look a proper tit.
