I just installed Windows 8 on my computer after investing in an SSD-drive etc...
And man was I in for a surprise... Win8 doesn't look anything I have ever seen on my computer before.
I couldn't even find out how to turn it off!!! In the end I used ctrl-F4... that seemed to still work.
So if you get any urges to install Win8, be ready for a surprise... and I still can't decide if it's a good one or not.

Well, maybe I will get used to it... I mean what they have done is to make the desktop OS look like a window mobile phone or something. So if you like how your Iphone/Android looks like, then you will probably enjoy the new windows 8. But I guess you get used to it after a while.

Putting in a SSD was however a bad idea. When it works it's really fast and nice... but 9/10 times when you reboot, BIOS can't find the SSD and you will have reboot like crazy to get it to work. So I think I will go back to the trusty old mechanical drives again.

Yeah, I'm not much of a fan of the "I want to be a smart phone" approach.

What version of BIOS are you using, Nex. UEFI or the old one? You will want to set your SSD to top of the boot priority, If you already have, then i'm not quite sure what is going on.

Prob is, is this the future of PC operating systems? Do we have to run with it or stay with Win7 forever? Suspect

Well, the problem is if I set the SSD as top boot priority in BIOS, then reboot.... then BIOS can't find the SSD, tries to start and can't find a bootable disk. If I then go back into BIOS, and sice it couldn't find the SSD the last time, it has now put another disk as top priority disk, and you need to manually set it to the SSD again... save and reboot. Then it's all rinse and repeat again Smile IF im lucky it it will find the SSD and then I usually just press F8 and then select where to boot from. Well, as long as no reboot is needed it's all fine.

Well, about Win 8, it's actually pretty good... very stable and nice once you get past the mobile phone look when you start. It's like you get a start page that looks like a mobile phone with apps and stuff, and from the you can enter your normal desktop. I have even heard there is ways to get rid of it if you don't like it. I guess they think people are so used to their mobiles by now that making the puter look like one will make people connect to it in some wierd way.

just a thought, the ssd doesn't have 'jumpers' like the old drives does it? To set it to primary or slave drive? Could it be set as Slave which is why windows cant find it? Just a thought.

nope, a ssd doesn't have anything... it's looks like a metal box with just the sata and power connector on it... I have read about it and it seems others also have the same problem, but no solution. It may be that bios don't have time to find it or something... like i said, it's just random when you reset. If I turn of the computer totally, and let it sit for a few minutes, then it find it without problem. Could also be my bios is a bit old... it's from 2008 with the latest Bios update from 2010...

We will wait on our windows intllation until you finish killing your computer and all is well
then we all know all will be fine, without the stress of actually killing ours, perfect, guess
as for the interface meh Smile we moan about each one haha, then eventually we allow this
new fangled technology to inbed itself, don't have a phone so no thoughts yet.

Well, the SSD was not a good idea, but I'm too lazy to reinstall again, so I guess I have to live with rebooting taking 20 min.
But for Win8, I can say that now that I have been running it for a while it grows on you. That start screen I was talking about is in fact not that bad at all. Once you figure out that it's kind of a "desktop" where you can rearrange stuff, and no more need actually for a lot of icons on the "normal" desktop. What makes you confused in the beginning is that it comes installed with a lot of crap that you don't want or don't want to see.. but it's easy to delete it and put in things you want there. Also new thing you installes ends up there. What the start screen really is, is a substitute for the "old" start button... you know you cklick the start button, and a menu comes upp with your installed programs etc. This new screen is the same, except it acts more like a big desktop. And to be honest, I actually like it now Smile

Apart from all that, the new windows is much faster and more stabe... when the SSD do work, windows boots up in like 5-10 seconds... so all in all, not very bad at all Smile

Well, my computer decided to die on me yesterday. I couldn't even get it to start BIOS. So, today I had to spend my hard earned money on a new system.
The only good thing is that now everything works like a dream... the SSD drive works like it should, the computer is really fast and stable.
I was a little suprised though... the new motherboard don't have a connector for my old trusty dvd-player??? How do they connect dvd's these days?

Howdy peeps. Windows 8 is mostly designed for touch screen applications, its a strange os as you dont boot into a desktop. It has also been stated that if you have anything less than an i3 processor it wont run all the app right. Id advice not touching it until atleast service pack 1 appears for it. Its basically built from windows 7 with a tile type touch screen look.

I'll maybe try it in a few months.

my new system has nothing for my old cards and other things but I noticed that I have 12 usb ports and I just get new things to plug into them like a sound card and dvd player.
I can't plug anything into it right now because I don't see much of pci-e x1 cards around much and maybe they like you to buy more usb items anyway.

I discovered that you need a dvd with SATA, like the hard drives.
No big deal, the sell for like 14€ so I will just get a new one.
