| Also im looking for another author. The books are like the lord of the rings books but written by someone else supposedly to be the true origin of the series which tolken made into his own vision. | |

| two thumbs - one idea ... thought we maybe start a book-section to drop some advice, comments and requests about books there ...
my first input would be about
George R. R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire
I don't like whispering about content too much in order to keep it as exciting as it can be, just I hardly ever read a series of books intensive and deep like this befor. "A Song of Ice and Fire" is epic, still in progress and meanwhile contains a load of thick books, readable preferably in the right succession.
Basically it tells us about the members of the family Stark of Winterfell, which spreads all over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, confronted with different aspects of the life, war, fate and magic in Westeros and beyond the borders of the Kingdoms.
It's characters are uncomparably intensive and deep. "A Song of Ice and Fire" is just outstanding, and you always hope it never will end.
* A Song of Ice and Fire
- A Game of Thrones (1996) - A Clash of Kings (1998) - A Storm of Swords (2000) - A Feast for Crows (2005) - A Dance with Dragons (2008) - The Winds of Winter (forthcoming) - A Dream of Spring (forthcoming)
(haven't read/listened to these both:)
# The Hedge Knight (1998) - set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire # The Sworn Sword (2003) - sequel to The Hedge Knight

The only one that I know of that was way ahead of Tolkien is Lord Dunsany... Not sure he wrote any trilogies or so but he did write a book called "The King of Elfland's daughter" first printed in 1924. And I know that both H.P Lovecraft and Robert E Howard was very influenced by him. The book I read is not something like the Lord of the Rings or anything, but a bit heavier and more mystic ... and at times even uncomprehenceable (at least to me)... and its said that he was a master at english prose, and even better than Tolkien.

| I can only agree with Cyn on the "Ice and Fire" books. They are by far one of the best books I have read in the Fantasy genre. At some points he outclass Tolkien, mainly becouse the stories are not so much Fantasy as Tolkien, but much more Flesh and Blood than Tolkien ever had. While Tolkien had some strange small people, some Orcs, Elfs, Dwarfs and great outdoor journey, in Fire and Ice you get INTRIGUES, Blood, scary Deads walking the earth, big siege battles, Love, sex, more blood, Mystic religions, glorious big Medieval cities, small dusty villages and inns. More blood and violance. Desert cities and slaves running amok. intrigues, lot's of intrigues. Chivalry Knights and not so Chivalry Knights... blood, rapes, decapitations, hangings. Love and laughter. Well I can go on and on of everything this epic series contains. But as Cyn mentioned, it's a series of books that you really don't want to end. Since it is about 6 books so far (almost about 6-7000 pages, you get to know all the character, and some you will love, and some you will love to hate | |

| I tried to read "Silmarillion" ... but as it was in english, I think it was a tiny bit too far out for me... almost like "The King of the Elfland's daughter" ... I read a few sentences, then I was lost, and had to re-read it... then after a few re-reads, I was compleatly lost ... That book is only for Hardcore Tolkienists! | |

Heh, I am english and I still kept getting lost every paragraph or so. I wanted to get into it but the damned thing just couldn't hold my attention. Anyway my own current favourite: the Tale of Einarinn series by Juliet McKenna.

| andre norton is also a favourite of mine if you ever have a chance to read the grand damn of sci fi.....look her up. she wrote sci fi during the cold war, it is very interesting to see how it affected her. When she first wrote sci fi there were no females in the field and therefore wrote under a male name so you may find her stuff under andrew Norton a short list of her books....... http://www.andre-norton.org/books/date.htmlI collect her books and have over a hundred...............my aim is to one day own first editions of some of her works....till then I search for older and older copies... love the OLD art work . | |

| Tolkien had great creativity but his writing frankly was shite.
Atm am reading Neil Gaiman, American Gods... also read Neverwhere by the same, frankly an exceptional read.
Modern Fantasy and well worth a look.

| I think for me David & Leigh Eddings and their 'Belgared' Epic Line of books. Although Anne McAffery and her 'To Ride Pegasus' line into the Rowan and beyond, although the fisrt few in the serries really stir my imagination. : : | |

| Hmm Rashy that gay one is that not the one that I saw in your suitcase when you came to stay? I used to be a horror fan, well I still like horror books but these days I have 0 patience with books, not sure why, perhaps because I like to read in bed and the Mr does not, he reads in the bath, I am waiting for the day I hear groans and moans comming from there when hes droped the book in. OMG Kar we have hundreds of books, it got so bad and they had grown so huge, he had to get rid of a load, they filled multiple book shelves up | |

| What is it about reading the in bath?, I have far more interesting things to do, like make bubbles, watch how the water runs off skin and which direction, why when you bung a pool of water on your does it vanish, then there is the rubber ducky which is extremely interesting as it bobs along, then there is the important wash and smell nice bit, I don't get time to read in there. | |

| It's called being efficient. Since baths by their nature require you to be lazy you can mitigate this slightly by getting some reading done whilst you're there.
You feel less guilty that way.
