as a 5th book was published in german recently I got to recall

Tales of the Otori, written by Lian Hearn, a kinda historical fantasy
saga in the sense that the landscape and clans are free fantasy although
leaned to medivial japanese habits.

Tales of the Otori
1. Across the Nightingale Floor (2002)
2. Grass for His Pillow (2003)
3. Brilliance of the Moon (2004)
4. The Harsh Cry of the Heron (2006)
5. Heaven's Net is Wide (2007) (seems to take place in the time befor "Across the Nightinggale Floor"

Terry Pratchett and Lois McMaster Bujold, but only in her Vorkosigan Saga. Her fantasy stuff is entirely too flowery and drawn out, like bad Anne Rice. Maybe I should say worse Anne Rice, since Anne Rice is already pretty bad.

Oh, and Connie Willis *nod nod*

George R. R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire

Basically it tells us about the members of the family Stark of Winterfell, which
spreads all over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, confronted with different
aspects of the life, war, fate and magic in Westeros and beyond the borders
of the Kingdoms.

It's characters are uncomparably intensive and deep. "A Song of Ice and Fire"
is just outstanding, and you always hope it never will end.

* A Song of Ice and Fire

- A Game of Thrones (1996)
- A Clash of Kings (1998)
- A Storm of Swords (2000)
- A Feast for Crows (2005)
- A Dance with Dragons (2008)
- The Winds of Winter (forthcoming)
- A Dream of Spring (forthcoming)

there will be a movie/series: Game of Thrones
